Must-see drives in Oregon

Stunning scenery and filled with natural beauty, Oregon consistently stays at the top of America’s list of favourite road trips. Keep reading and find out why it could become yours, too.

We will take you through some road trip tips and the best places to see along the drive.

The state has over two dozen scenic byways for you to drive along, all leading to a variety of options like small towns, epic views, and breathtaking heights.

We can’t mention all the amazing byways here, but we’ll give you our favourite routes, beginning with the West Cascades Scenic Byway.

West Cascades Scenic Byway

Traveling along the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, this route takes you through the Mount Hood area and along stunning national forests.

Being your trip in the urban city of Portland.  The large international airport here is the perfect place to hire a car.  Though not the capital, Portland is the largest city in Oregon.  Visit the Oregon Zoo, peaceful Washington Park, or historic Pittock Mansion.

From here, head east to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Drive along a highway studded with maple trees before reaching the great natural wonder of the massive waterfall surrounded by greenery as far as you can see.

Heading south will take you through Mount Hood, Willamette, and Deschutes National parks.  The national parks will provide you with a slew of options for any nature lover - hot springs, hiking, and perfect places for camping and picnics. Along the drive, make sure to stop in and see at least one of the three amazing waterfalls - Sahalie, Koosah, and Proxy.

Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway

Part of a route that stretches down into California, this byway takes you through Crater Lake National Park and down to Klamath Falls.  Formed by a massive eruption over 7,700 years ago that collapsed a mountain, you can drive right around the edge of the caldera that forms the gorgeous lake.

Drive south and you’ll reach Klamath Falls. While here, check out the historic Fort Klamath - an old military outpost. Or, grab a pair of binoculars - bird watchers will love Klamath Lake Basin National Wildlife Refuge and the world-class wildlife sightings it has to offer.

The scenic vistas will pull you in, but you’ll want to come back again and again for the friendly people, astonishing nature trails and amazing driving that you will experience in The Beaver State.
