Steamboat Springs

For a spectacular road trip, drive the 3.5 hours to Steamboat Springs. Head west out of Denver on Interstate 70 to Highway 40 north, where you’ll drive on amazing mountain roads and pass the famous ski resort, Winter Park. Highway 40 will take you all the way Steamboat Spring, a very laid-back, ski resort mountain town that will entice you to stay forever. Outdoor activities are available year round, from skiing, fishing, tubing or kayaking. This section of Colorado has numerous hot springs to visit as well. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most famous national parks in America, with 60 peaks over 12,000 feet high. Take Interstate 25 north out of Denver to Highway 36 north and pass through Boulder and Estes Park to enter the great Rocky Mountains. During the summer, the Trail Ridge Road is open and is known as one of the best drives in America. If you visit in the winter, rent snowshoes! You will be at very high altitudes, so always make sure to walk leisurely and keep hydrated.

As you head back down Highway 36 towards Denver, stop in Estes Park to shop or take a ghost tour at the Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s book The Shining. Also stop and walk Boulder’s Pearl Street pedestrian mall which is full of charm, one-of-a-kind shops, and entertaining street performers.

Glenwood Springs

A trip to Colorado is incomplete without driving west out of Denver on Interstate 70. The drive itself is a worthwhile destination, but one of the most unique stops on the interstate is Glenwood Springs, located three hours west of Denver. Experience the world’s largest hot springs pool, a 125 year old lodge where Teddy Roosevelt stayed many times, and drive by the infamous jail where Ted Bundy once escaped. Hike up to Hanging Lake, voted the number one hike in Colorado. It is a tough hike, but the natural beauty is well worth the payoff.

The second largest city in Colorado is Colorado Springs and is just one hour south of Denver on I-25. With an abundance of activities, highlights include the natural beauty of both Garden of the Gods and Pike’s Peak which are accessible from Highway 24, just off of Interstate 25. You can take a cog railway ride to the top of Pike’s Peak or drive to the top, but the drive can take multiple hours and there are some steep dropoffs. The Air Force Academy Chapel is perhaps one of the most beautiful buildings in Colorado and a great stop if you have extra time.
